Specific information about our curriculum.
Welcome!
We are delighted that you and your children are interested in the religious education program at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Sarasota. The classes are available from 10:30-11:30 each Sunday morning, and at least once a month the children and youth join the adults for a portion of the church service.
The goal of our programs is to foster exploration of ideas and values based upon the principles of Unitarian Universalism. Each class has a curriculum designed to encourage and engage the children and youth as they listen to stories, discuss their ideas, enjoy activities that emphasize the concept presented that day or create a story, song or work of art which shows their interpretation of that idea.
We also strive to create a comfortable environment that fosters a sense of community between the children, the teachers and the families. At the end of our hour together each Sunday morning we frequently provide notes for parents which summarize some of the morning’s activities and offer some suggestions of things to do together as an extension of the class. The RE Roundtable meets on the second Sunday each month after the church service. This is a time for parents, teachers and RE supporters to get to know each other better and to share ideas while enjoying the pot luck lunch. There are also evening events on the second Saturday of each month when parents and members of the church community are invited to enjoy a game and pizza night or, on alternating months, to join in a discussion group on a topic of interest or have an evening out with friends while their children are cared for at the church.
An important part of our value system is that we each can help make a difference in the world and so throughout the year the children will engage in several social justice projects. Sometimes these projects will coordinate with the larger church community and at other times the children and youth will create social justice activities on their own.
And the children’s version of our UU principles guides us on this journey together as we believe:
